How much does the Lone Star Proud for Kids license plate cost?

STANDARD Lone Star Proud for Kids license plates cost $30 in addition to the regular vehicle registration fee. STANDARD plates feature a randomly generated alpha/numeric combination. (For example, "KHR57" or "WY123") PERSONALIZED plates are $70 in addition to the regular vehicle registration fee. For PERSONALIZED plates, you can make your own alpha/numeric selection for your plates. (See FAQ regarding personalized plates or download the application for more information).

How much goes to help abused and neglected children?

CASA receives $22 for each Lone Star Proud for Kids license plate sold (STANDARD or PERSONALIZED). The other $8 goes to the Department of Transportation State Highway Fund. Proceeds from the plate help CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and Child Advocate programs in Texas recruit and train community volunteers to speak up for victims of child abuse in court.

Do I have to wait for my annual renewal notice to get my new Lone Star Proud for Kids license plate?

No. You can order your Lone Star Proud for Kids license plates at any time. Your County Tax Assessor-Collector will adjust your vehicle registration expiration date and registration fees accordingly to match that of your new plates.

I would like to order your special license plate but I just renewed my car registration. Can I still order your plate?

Yes you can. Just fill out an application and send it in with the appropriate dollar amount. You will be notified when your plates are ready. When you go to your local tax office to pick up your plates, you will be charged a prorated amount and your registration renewal date will change.

Can I personalize my Lone Star Proud for Kids license plate?

Yes. A personalized Lone Star Proud for Kids license plate is $70 ($30 for the Lone Star Proud for Kids plate plus $40 for personalization) in addition to the regular registration fee. For personalized plates, you can select your own alpha/numeric combination. (For example, "4KIDZ" or "4CASA" -- please note: both of these numbers are already assigned and are not available for any other vehicle ). It is important to BE CREATIVE in your selection -- there are more than 17 million registered vehicles in Texas; once a plate number is assigned, it can never be duplicated. You can call the Texas Department of Transportation at (512) 374-5010 to see if your selections are available.

Please see directions for personalized plates on the application for more information.

Can I keep my current license plate number?

If you currently have a randomly generated plate number, you will NOT be able to keep that number. Instead, when you order your Lone Star Proud for Kids license plate, a new, randomly selected alpha/numeric combination will be assigned to you.

If you currently have a personalized plate, you CAN transfer the message, provided that your selection is no more than five spaces long.

How long will it take to get my plates?

Please allow three weeks for notification of approval (a letter sent to you by mail). After you receive this notice, you can go to your local tax office to pick up your plates. (See below for information on how to get your plates ).

How will I receive my Lone Star Proud for Kids license plate?

Once you receive notification of approval by mail, it's a good idea to contact your local County Tax Assessor-Collector's office BEFORE going to make sure your plates have arrived and to determine exactly what you will need to bring to exchange your plates. After you confirm that your plates have arrived, you can then go to the tax office to get your new plates. At this time, the Tax Assessor-Collector will make any necessary adjustments in your vehicle registration renewal and fee schedule.

How do I drive to the county tax office to make the exchange if I have taken the plates off of my car?

You can place one license plate in the back window of your car.

Can I transfer my plates to another car? What if I sell my car?

To transfer the plates to another vehicle registered in the applicant's name, a corrected vehicle registration must be obtained through the county tax office. The license plates may not be transferred to another owner.

If you are selling a car that has the Lone Star Proud For Kids plates and want to keep your plates, you will need to get replacement plates from your local tax office or the auto dealer. If you have a buyer that wants the plates, you will need to send a letter to the Special Plates Branch at the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) saying you are giving the plates to the buyer for no monetary consideration. The buyer will then need to send in an application and pay the full annual fee for the plates. If you are selling/trading your car through a dealer, the dealership CANNOT keep the special plates.

For more information on the transfer of plates, please contact TxDOT at (512) 374-5010.

What if I have the old license plate design?

If you have the old license plate design (gold star with blue and red background--no heart), you are welcome to keep the plate until it expires, providing you continue to pay the annual fee for the license plate.

If you would like to switch to the new plate, you can write "I would like to switch to the new plate design" on your plate renewal notice from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and send it in with the annual fee. If you have the STANDARD plate, TxDOT will issue you a new plate with a new plate number. If you have a PERSONALIZED plate and wish to keep your current selection, please indicate that on your renewal notice before you send it in.

If I have a disabled persons license plates, can I still get special license plates?

You can only have one set of license plates registered to a car. The county tax office can issue you a disabled person placard to hang on your rear view mirror. Then you can order the Lone Star Proud for Kids license plate.

Can I get one for my motorcycle, 18-wheeler, boat, or RV?

The special license plate is only available for passenger or light commercial vehicles having a manufacturer's rated carrying capacity of one ton or less. An RV is the only one of these vehicles that meets this qualification.
